First Definition Portugal Only?

I've been told by Brazilians on a language-learning site that the first sense ("puppy") isn't used in Brazil, and that there is another word used for that. I'm not certain how widespread this is in Brazil, but perhaps it should be noted that that definition is regional (i.e. Portugal only) if someone can confirm that that is the case. The original sense of this word was "puppy"; Later, in Brazilian Portuguese, this term came to be indiscriminately applied to any domestic dog (independently of its age). According to the Brazilian dictionary Houaiss, cachorro means puppy and, informally, dog. The only synonym I know for "cachorro" is "cãozinho" (a young or a small-sized dog).
