Center[edit]

A user from any of the countries mentioned does not want to be misled by "alternative spelling of". I don't want to start an edit war with Widsith, so I've merely adjusted the wording (perhaps we could have a template if American spellings are going to predominate). A much better option would be a combined entry as suggested elsewhere and as used by the OED, but the snags have not been ironed out. Does anyone have any suggestions? We tried for quite some time to have two separate but complete entries, but with a special template for the translations that allowed one set of translations to be shared by and edited at either page. We finally gave up on this. At this point, I think the best we can do is like we have for analyze and analyse. Both entries are complete, but the translation section of one refers to the translation section of the other. I know this is not a great solution, because changes to the definitions in one will probably not be copied to the other, but.... —Stephen (Talk) 02:26, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply
Yes, I'm much happier with separate entries (as we have had for many years). We really ought to find a way to have a common entry that does not suggest that either spelling is "better" than the other, but I gather that the snags have not been overcome. The latest suggestion is to have the actual common definitions in template space. I don't know whether it would work. Dbfirs 10:27, 4 November 2011 (UTC)Reply

I still think we should have separate entries, as suggested by Stephen, above. This would save on edit wars (see history). People object to the template-space suggestion because they think that this would make it difficult for new users to edit. Is that disadvantage worse than having disgruntled users and edit wars?
