@Mar vin kaiser The correspondence Malay d/j ~ Tagalog r is always a good first indicator for borrowing (although there are exceptions). Wolff treats garing as a loan from Malay (p. 363, 12a), see his classical paper "Malay Borrowings in Tagalog", available in David Zorc's "vault"[1]. –Austronesier (talk) 10:14, 20 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
