Latin. Sense 2: "(Medieval Latin) indigenous, rustic, opposite of foreign". Not in any reference works that I can see. Niermeyer has a couple of extra senses but none that match this one ("a recent convert", "a lay brother", "a private person"). Du Cange has a note that might be relevant if you squint (essentially that it designates people who only speak their native language and not Latin, also given in the DMLBS as sense 1d), but it's clear from the citations e.g. Bede that this is basically sense 1, i.e. an illiterate. —Al-Muqanna المقنع (talk) 05:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
