This page generates an 'index' into a list of pages for a Pali category. It is invoked automatically by the template {{poscatboiler}}.

The lemmas are currently not sorted in the traditional Pali order. The index follows the order that they are sorted in, with one exception. The sort order by script is Latin, Devanagari, Bengali, Sinhala, Thai, Lao, Burmese, Khmer, Tai Tham, Brahmi, Chakma. Note that the vowel letters come first in Devanagari, Bengali, Sinhala and Brahma, while consonants generally precede them in Thai, Lao, Burmese, Khmer and Tai Tham. This order is the default order defined by Unicode code point, with a few adjustments.

To keep the index compact for as long as possible, the following reductions have been made:

  • Scripts whose lemmas all fit on a single page are not split by letter in the index. For compactness, these have been grouped together at the bottom of the index. (This is the ordering exception).
  • While a script's lemmas with initial vowels all fit on one page, the vowel letters are not split in the index.
  • While the 'Pali alphabet' contains 41 letters (33 consonants, including niggahita), and 8 vowel letters), two are excluded as being incapable of starting a word - niggahita and . Variations in writing system can increase the number of initials, e.g. v. in the Tai Tham script.
