[edit]First attested as in westric in 1408. Derived from a contracted compound of wester (“western, west-”) and wijk (“farmstead, village, settlement”). Compare Middelijk, Noordijk, Oostenrijk, Schadijk, De Zoeke, Zoeke and Zuuk.
