From Late Latin aldius (half-freeman), from Lombardic *aldi, from Proto-West Germanic *aldī, from Proto-Germanic *aldiz (human being, man), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂el- (to grow). Cognate with Old Saxon aldi, eldi (human being, person, man), Old English ielde pl (men).
