Etymology[edit]

Likely ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰerHǵ- (to shine, whiten), hence closely related to Albanian bardhë (white) and Illyrian Βάρδυλις (Bárdulis). Suffixed with a patronymic suffix identical to Ancient Greek -ίδης (-ídēs).
