Etymology[edit]
From Old Cornish bliþen, from Proto-Celtic *blēdanī (“year”), possibly from Proto-Indo-European *bʰloyd- (“pale”), though the semantic connection is weak.[1] See also Lithuanian blaĩvas (“whitish, blue, sober”), Proto-West Germanic *blait, Albanian blehurë.
Celtic cognates include Welsh blwydd, Breton blizenn, Old Irish blíadain, Cornish bloth, Breton bloaz; Old Breton blened, Welsh blynedd.
