Dutch[edit]
Etymology[edit]
From Dalmatiër (“Dalmatian”), person associated with the coastal region of Dalmatia (in Dutch Dalmatië, the root of the word), presently in Croatia; on account of the similar black-on-white spots on the ermine a royal dalmatic is made of; there exists a popular etymology, only 'applicable' to Dutch, that the dog breed was named after its suitability for geodetic registrations of the maat (“measure(ment)”) of a dal (“dale”).
