Etymology

[edit]

Back-formation from fraŭlino (Miss) (subtracting suffix -ino (female)), from German Fräulein.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): [ˈfrawlo]
  • Audio:(file)
  • Rhymes: -awlo
  • Hyphenation: fraŭ‧lo

Noun

[edit]

fraŭlo (accusative singular fraŭlon, plural fraŭloj, accusative plural fraŭlojn)

  1. bachelor (unmarried man)

Usage notes

[edit]

Unlike sinjoro (Mister), sinjorino (Madam, Mistress) and fraŭlino (Miss), fraŭlo is not used as a courtesy title. Not quite equivalent to English "Master", as that is age-based rather than marriage-based.
