Swedish

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Passive of gilla.

Verb

[edit]

gillas (present gills or gillas, preterite gilldes or gillades, supine gillts or gillats, imperative gills or gillas)

  1. (deponent) to count (be valid)
    Synonym: räknas
Du fuskade, så det gills inte!
You cheated, so it doesn't count!

Usage notes

[edit]

The conjugation gills/gilldes/gillts, while not in SAOL, is common in practice, including in the media. "Gills" is mentioned in SO. "Det gillas inte" is likely to be interpreted either as "it isn't liked" or (less likely) as "it isn't valid" by many native speakers (where the latter interpretation is much more formal-sounding compared to "it doesn't count," hinging on a somewhat dated sense of gilla).

Verb

[edit]

gillas

  1. passive infinitive of gilla
  2. present passive of gilla
