Etymology[edit]
From the earlier form guinzale, which according to Treccani probably derives from Middle High German wintseil (“tension rope used to secure a tent against the wind”, literally “wind-rope”) (> modern German Windseil), equivalent to German Wind + Seil, which see for more.
