From Spanish hostia, from Latin hostia (“victim, sacrifice”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰóstis (“guest, stranger”) in its root sense of "enemy, stranger," whence also Proto-Germanic *gastiz and Proto-Slavic *gostь.
