From Proto-Italic *hostos, from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰós-tos (hand), from *ǵʰes- (hand). Cognate with Sanskrit हस्त (hásta, hand), Avestan 𐬰𐬀𐬯𐬙𐬀 (zasta, hand). Related to Latin hostia (victim).
