Dutch[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

From huin (giant) +‎ bed (bed), roughly meaning "a bed (of stones) built by giants". Cognate to and probably formed after German Hünenbett (dolmen), which may have caused the Dutch -ui- to be replaced by -u- - although this may also be due to Low German influence.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /ˈɦynəbɛt/, /ˈɦʏnəbɛt/
  • (file)
