Etymology[edit]
From Proto-Finnic *kaunis (“beautiful”), from Proto-Germanic *skauniz. The shift from "beautiful" to "red" was probably influenced by a tendency in Old East Slavic which dominated in the region, as it is seen in Russian красный (krasnyj).
