From Vulgar Latin oclus, syncopated form of Latin oculus (“eye”), from Proto-Italic *okʷ(e)los, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ-(e)lo-s, *h₃okʷ-(e)lo-s, derived from the root *h₃ekʷ- (“to see; eye”).
