From Malay pendeta, from Javanese ꦥꦤ꧀ꦝꦶꦠ (pandhita, “a Hindu priest, religious leader”), from Old Javanese paṇḍita (“sage, holy man”), from Sanskrit पण्डित (paṇḍitá, “scholar, philosopher”). Doublet of pandai.
