French[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Vulgar Latin *putrīre, from Latin putrēre (with a change in verb class), with inflexions taken from putrēscere.

Pronunciation[edit]

  • IPA(key): /pu.ʁiʁ/
  • (file)

Verb[edit]

pourrir

  1. (chiefly intransitive) to rot, decompose, putrefy, crumble
  2. (intransitive) to waste away from a disease such as gangrene

Conjugation[edit]

This is a regular verb of the second conjugation, like finir, choisir, and most other verbs with infinitives ending in -ir. One salient feature of this conjugation is the repeated appearance of the infix -iss-.
