From Middle High German süeze, from Old High German suozi, from Proto-West Germanic *swōtī, from Proto-Germanic *swōtuz, from Proto-Indo-European *swéh₂dus. Cognate with German süß, Dutch zoet, English sweet, Icelandic sætur.
