From Middle High German soufen (to drink, slurp, sink, go down), from Old High German sūfan, from Proto-Germanic *sūpaną. Cognates include Yiddish זויפֿן (zoyfn), German saufen, Dutch zuipen, Swedish supa (Old Norse súpa), English sup.
