From French certificat, from Medieval Latin certificātum. Likely borrowed via Russian сертифика́т (sertifikát).

Usage notes

The VLKK recommends the following distinctions:[1]

  • liudijimas: document attesting an obvious fact, such as a birth certificate
  • sertifikatas: document attesting authenticity or value
  • pažymėjimas: document attesting certain data or results, such as a driver's license

In practice, the terms may be used relatively interchangeably.
