Etymology

From Old Norse steypa (to cast, pour), from Proto-Germanic *staupijaną (to tumble, plunge), cognate with Norwegian støype, Swedish stöpa (English steep is borrowed from Old Norse). The Germanic verb is related to the adjective *staupaz (steep) and the verb *stūpijaną, *stūpēną (to stand out).
