Likely borrowed from Middle Low German sterke (starch, stiffness, strength), from Old Saxon *sterkī, from Proto-West Germanic *starkī. Cognate with English starch, German Stärke (starch), dialectal Dutch sterk (starch). Compare also Swedish stärkelse (starch).
