Swedish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Superficially svepa (sweep) +‎ skäl (reason), formed by analogy with the older, archaic noun svepsak (with the same meaning). The first half of compound is cognate with Icelandic svipur (appearance). Attested since 1807.
