Etymology 1[edit]
From Malay tangsi (“barracks”), probably from Hokkien 團舍/团舍, compound of 團/团 (thn̂g, “regiment; corps”) + 舍 (sià, “lodging place”) or 董事 (táng-sī, “director”). (This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.).
