Etymology

[edit]

First attested in the 14th century. Semi-learned borrowing from Latin trāditiōnem (the suffix in this word indicates a semi-learned form or a formation from trair +‎ -ció; a fully inherited result would have ended in -çó or ; compare the similar case of Spanish traición). Doublet of tradició, a later borrowing.
