Polish[edit]
Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Old Polish zeger, from Middle High German seigære, from seigen, possibly related to sīgen, from Proto-Germanic *sīganą. Alternatively seigen may be derived from Latin exagium. Compare German Seiger, Yiddish זייגער (zeyger), Hungarian cseger. Compare also German Zeiger, which is etymologically unrelated but may have contributed to the semantic development.
