Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Middle French escharpe, possibly from Frankish *skirpja or of other Germanic origin (compare Old Norse skreppa (small bag, wallet, satchel)). Alternatively from Medieval Latin scirpa (little woven bag of rushes), from Latin scirpus (rush, bullrush).
