Etymology[edit]
Inherited from Old Norse ørvendr. The h comes from the mistaken association with the word hönd (“hand”). Derived from the verb Proto-Germanic *uzwandijaną- attested by Gothic 𐌿𐍃𐍅𐌰𐌽𐌳𐌾𐌰𐌽 (uswandjan, “to deviate”), Old English āwendan (“to turn away, turn the wrong way round”), and Old High German irwenten (“to turn away, hinder”).[1]
