Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Vietic *l-dɛh ~ *l-tɛh (water leech). Cognate with Muong tía, Thavung เต่ฮ, Arem tatah. Compare Pacoh itếh. Likely of Austronesian origin, compare Eastern Cham ꨤꨓꩍ/latah and Malay lintah.

Unrelated to Chinese (MC tet) (SV: điệt).
