Etymology[edit]

From a Maghrebi Arabic form akin to Moroccan Arabic جران (jrān), from a Berber language; compare Kabyle ajṛun. Possibly from an alteration of Latin rāna with initial g- imitating the croaking sound of a frog, as in Catalan granota and French grenouille.
