  2. (extIPA, before a segment) a creaky onset.
  3. (IPA, dated) a low oscillating tone, such as rising–falling–rising.

Usage notes[edit]

The tone mark is placed before the word or syllable that bears the tone. This symbol is effectively obsolete, having been replaced by Chao tone letters and tone diacritics.
