Inherited from Byzantine Greek βλασταίνω (blastaínō) from the Ancient Greek βλαστ(άνω) (blast(ánō), bud, sprout, grow) + -αίνω (-aíno), a metaplasm of the suffix based on the past stem βλαστησ-. Doublet of βλαστάνω (vlastáno).
