Ancient Greek[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Often derived from an unattested *λύκη (*lúkē, light) + *βᾱ́ς (*bā́s, going) (seen in βιβᾱ́ς (bibā́s)), as “path of light”, but Beekes finds this unconvincing. He rather suggests a Pre-Greek origin, in view of the alternative form with "μ" and the suffix "-αντ-".
