Etymology

From Romanian măgură (hill), an expressive creation based on *măc- or *moc-; possibly from a Balkanic substrate language. Akin to Albanian magulë (heap), metathetic form of gamulë. Other less likely theories included Latin macula or *maculum, or a Proto-Slavic *mogyla.
