From Proto-Hellenic *píťťa, suggested to be from Proto-Indo-European *píts-ih₂ ~ *pits-yéh₂, from *pī́ts (resin) +‎ *-ih₂, cognate with Albanian píshë (pine tree), and related to πίτυς (pítus, pine).[1][2][3]
