From παρα- (para-, near, alongside) +‎ ἐκβολή (ekbolḗ, something tossed off; a digression), from ἐκβάλλω (ekbállō, to throw out), from ἐκ- (ek-, from, out of) + βάλλω (bállō, to throw).
