Usually derived from Proto-Indo-European *dʰeh₁dʰ-. Others prefer to connect it with Proto-Slavic *dědъ (grandfather), Lithuanian dė̃dė, dė̃dis (uncle) and Latvian dȩ̀ds (old man).
