Etymology 1

Inherited from Old East Slavic волосъ (volosŭ), from Proto-Slavic *volsъ. Doublet of влас (vlas), a borrowing from Old Church Slavonic. From *h₂welh₁- (“hair; wool”).

Cognate with Sanskrit वल्श (válśa, “twig, sprout”), Persian گرس (gors, “curled hair”), Northern Kurdish pirç (“hair”) and Lithuanian valaĩ, as well as with Old Armenian վարս (vars), an Iranian borrowing.
