Etymology[edit]
Of substrate origin (Thracian?), cognate/related to Romanian groapă (“hole, pit”), Albanian gropë (“pit”). Probably ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *gʰrep-, a variant of *gʰrebʰ- (“to scoop”). Doublet of гроб (grob, “grave”).
