Etymology[edit]

Compounded from два (dva) +‎ на (na) +‎ дзе́сяць (dzjésjacʹ), literally two on ten. Compare Old Church Slavonic дъва на дєсѧтє (dŭva na desęte). Other cognates include Ukrainian двана́дцять (dvanádcjatʹ) and Russian двена́дцать (dvenádcatʹ).
