Etymology[edit]

From за- (za-) +‎ бубён (bubjón, diamonds (genitive plural; playing cards)) +‎ -ный (-nyj). Diamonds (бу́бны (búbny)) was the lowest ranking card suit in medieval Russia. It was customary for the prison inmates to have it on the back of their clothes. The term was used as an informal term for prisoner.
