Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Venetian zipón, possibly via Greek ζιπούνι (zipoúni), since the 16th century. Ultimately from Arabic جُبَّة (jubba, long garment). Doublet of шу́ба (šúba), дже́мпер (džémper), ю́бка (júbka), and жупа́н (župán).
