From Proto-Permic *kulni, from Proto-Uralic *kale-. Cognates include Finnish kuolla and Northern Mansi хо̄луӈкве (hōluňkwe).

Permic cognates include Komi-Zyrian кувны (kuvny) and Udmurt кулыны (kulyny).
