From a Uralic (most likely Permic or Ugric) source: compare Udmurt пожий (požij), Northern Mansi па̄сиг (pāsig, young deer) (both ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *péḱu (cattle)).

Cognate with Tatar поши (poşi, Alces alces).
