Inherited from Proto-Slavic *niknǫti. Slavic cognates include Czech vzniknout (to arise, originate) and Serbo-Croatian niknuti (to sprout, spring). Further cognates include Ancient Greek νεῖκος (neîkos, quarrel, strife) and Ancient Greek νῑ́κη (nī́kē, victory).
