Etymology[edit]

Inherited from Old Ruthenian нищити (niščiti, to destroy, to devastate, to ruin, to impoverish), possibly from Old Polish niszczyć, ultimately from Proto-Slavic *niščiti. By surface analysis, (dated) ни́щий (nýščyj) +‎ -ити (-yty).
