Etymology

  1. From ой (oy) + оҕос (oğos). ой (oy) from Proto-Turkic *ōj. Compare to Northern Altai уй (uy, steppe, Tuba), Tatar уй- (uy-, to hollow out), etc.
  2. Or from Proto-Turkic *ayakuč, diminutive and back vowel variant of *eyekü (side, upper rib). Compare Chuvash аяк (ajak) and Turkish eyeği.
